My favourite description of the country came from Souleiman Youssouf, a 35-year-old Somalilander who lives and works in Canada but tries to visit every year. “Somaliland is a naked man in a tie,” he told me, in a vivid reference to the way the country spans extremes of development. Ageing nomads still walk the plains with their camels, but they can also call the US at cheap rates on the territory’s extremely competitive and successful mobile telephone networks. And although no other territory in the world recognises it, Somaliland strives to run itself as any other nation-state. It holds elections, passes laws and collects taxes - however meagre - and has developed an impressive clutch of commercial mobile phone, mobile internet and money transfer services. From Katrina Manson's notes on her visit to the 6th Annual Hargeisa International Book Fair. My favourite short story about economics set in Hargeisa is here.

More Awesome News from the (non-)nation of Somaliland
Monty Munford thinks that Somaliland, not content with democratic elections and biometric passports, is also likely to become the first nation to become a cashless society, due to expansion in mobile money transfers and retail payments.
He also throws in these tidbits:
“For every dollar there are almost 17,000 Somaliland Shillings”
“The state itself runs on a budget of only $40 million dollars”
“competition between the country’s carriers means calls from Somaliland are five to six times cheaper than other African countries.”
I really have to go visit.

President loses election in Somaliland
Congratulations to the new President and to the people of Somaliland.
In elections described as free and fair by international observers, Somaliland replaced its President with the opposition candidate.
This is a great achievement for the pseudo-state. Less than 10% of African leaders since independence have left office through the ballot box.
Will this bolster claims for international recognition?
Nick Eubank, author of a couple of papers on Somaliland’s political development argues that

Update: A friend has sent me an article by Rageh Omaar, a British journalist born in Mogadishu whose family are from Somaliland.
"For Somalilanders, formal recognition by the rest of the world is the holy grail, a national obsession that defines part of what it means to be a Somalilander and that cuts across all party lines."

recognition-or more specifically the subsequent eligibility for foreign assistance which would almost certainly follow-has significant potential to upset Somaliland's success.
…
in the absence of foreign aid, Somaliland's government was forced to negotiate with a wide array of actors in order to develop a sufficient tax base, and it was as a result of these negotiations that the country developed highly representative institutionsYou can probably guess what my solution would be. Don’t give aid to the Government of Somaliland. Give it to the people.
